Struktury dźwiękowe składają się z zestawów fal akustycznych o odpowiednio dobranych częstotliwościach i amplitudach oraz ciszy pomiędzy nimi. Celem muzyki jest oddziaływanie na świadomość słuchacza. Jest zjawiskiem odbieranym subiektywnie, zależnym od indywidualnych skłonności, wcześniejszych doświadczeń, społecznych kryteriów wartości, aktualnego nastroju i wielu innych czynników. Od mowy ludzkiej różni się znacznie większą abstrakcyjnością przekazywanych treści oraz wykorzystaniem oprócz głosu ludzkiego również instrumentów muzycznych. W tradycyjnym i najbardziej rozpowszechnionym ujęciu, struktury muzyczne składają się z rytmu, melodii oraz harmonii. Rozpatrując ten problem bardziej szczegółowo, podział wygląda następująco (są to tzw. elementy dzieła muzycznego):
